Connect Google Search Console and Bing
Connecting Google Search Console brings your real clicks, impressions and positions into RankEngine. Connecting Bing Webmaster Tools lets RankEngine submit your sitemap to Bing — and ChatGPT Search and Copilot index from Bing, so this is how AI assistants find new pages.
Who this is for
Merchants who want real search data in RankEngine and faster indexing on Google and Bing. You can do this during setup (the Connect step) or any time later.
What you need
- A Google account that has your store as a verified property in Google Search Console. If you have none yet, add your domain there and verify it first.
- For Bing: a Bing Webmaster Tools account. You can import your site from Search Console there instead of verifying it again.
- About five minutes.
Connect Google Search Console
Open Settings from the app menu and choose Google & Bing under Connections.
Under Connect to Google Search Console, click Sign in with Google. Google's sign-in opens; choose the account that owns your Search Console property and allow the access RankEngine asks for.
Back in RankEngine, under Property selection, open Search Console Site and pick the site that matches your store (use your own domain, not the
.myshopify.comaddress, when you have one).Click Save in the save bar.
Scroll to Sitemap URL. The address of your Shopify sitemap is filled in; change it if your store uses a custom domain. Click Validate, then Submit to Google.
Connect Bing Webmaster Tools
In Bing Webmaster Tools, add your store and verify it (importing from Search Console works).
In Bing Webmaster Tools, open Settings, then API access, and copy your API key.
In RankEngine, under Connect to Bing Webmaster, paste it into Bing Webmaster API key and click Connect Bing. The key is stored encrypted.
Click Submit sitemap now to send your sitemap to Bing straight away.
To keep Bing up to date on its own, switch on Autopilot and its Notify search engines of changes rule (see Setting up Autopilot). When your store changes, RankEngine then submits your sitemap to Bing at most once a day.
What you should see
- Under Search Console: "Signed in as" your Google account and the site you chose, then Search metrics — total clicks and impressions for the last 28 days, average click rate and average position.
- Bing Webmaster connected with your site.
- Content Studio tracking weekly clicks and positions for each published post.
Search Console data takes a day or two to fill in for a property Google has only just started reporting on.
Troubleshooting
- "No verified sites found." The Google account you signed in with has no verified property. Click Add property in Search Console, verify your domain there, then come back.
- "Google session expired — please reauthorize." Google rejected the saved sign-in. Click Reauthorize Google and sign in again; your data is kept.
- "Reconnect to enable all Google services." Click Reconnect Google and grant the access Google lists.
- "Google can't share this site's data with us." The signed-in account lost access to the chosen site. Pick a site it can see, or sign in with the account that owns it.
- "Bing rejected the key." Check the site is added and verified in Bing Webmaster Tools and that you copied the whole key.
- Which sitemap do I submit? The XML sitemap address shown under Sitemap URL. An HTML sitemap page for your footer is rejected by Search Console.
- Disconnecting. Disconnect Google or Disconnect Bing stops the data from updating until you connect again.
